People around the world eat certain foods on New Years that they think will bring them good luck. In the South we eat black-eyed peas. This black-eyed pea soup, link here, is fantastic served with southern-style cornbread (meaning not sweet cornbread) or crusty bread, which I've shown here.
I wish you the best of luck, good health, and much happiness in the new year.
This will be shared with Foodie Friday at Rattlebridge Farm, Miz Helen’s Country Kitchen Full Plate Thursday, and Foodie Friday at Simple Recipes.
Happy New Year everyone.

Ah, I was trying to think of other foods that were eaten on the new year! I love beans of all sorts and this soup looks fabulous! Now can I find black eyed peas in France? Worth looking for this perfect winter meal.

I did not know if I had to go to the grocery store today then I saw your post – I do have to go to buy my black-eyed peas, and all the “fixins.” We are just back from Tennessee and I forgot about New Year’s food. Thank you for reminding me and now I feel better about the New Year… I wish you all the best in 2014 – good health, much fun and great dishes.
ReplyDeleteHeading out today to by some white beans, kale and sausage to make a stew for good luck. Your black eyed peas look great! Happy New Year Sam!
ReplyDeleteYou too:)

ReplyDeleteOh yummmm!
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Sam! This looks like the perfect way to ring in the New Year, yum!
ReplyDeleteI have my ham hocks cooking. The hock meat and broth will be used to cook my black-eyed peas for good luck. I've never gone a year without having them on New Year's day. All the best to you and Meakin for a healthy and happy New Year.
ReplyDeleteSo, another year is winding down and it has been a joy to read all of your recipe posts. Every year, I swear I'm going to make Black-Eyed Peas... I love any kind of legume. New Year's Day is also our wedding anniversary, where we splurge and go out to eat at a swanky place. I pretty much fast, for the day, to prepare for it. A bowl of these would give me the energy I need, for the day. Well done! Happy New Year to you.
ReplyDeleteSam, I don't know about the good luck part...but this sure looks like great mid-winter comfort food! Wishing you and yours a Happy and Healthy New Year! Take Care, Big Daddy Dave
ReplyDeleteLooks and sounds delicious, Sam. In addition to black-eyed peas, we will have collard greens, pork tenderloin and cornbread.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year!
I've heard of the blackeyed peas tradition, Sam. Many Italians like to eat lentil beans for the same reason. Beans are so nutritious and a wonderful way to detox from all the holiday excesses.
ReplyDeleteA very happy and healthy 2014 to you and Meakin!
Yum-I'll have a bowl of soup and big slice of corn bread please! I wish you a wonderful 2014 Sam-enjoy:@)
ReplyDeleteAll the best, Sam, for a WONDERFUL 2014!
ReplyDeleteLove to you and your sweetie!

Dear Sam, The soup looks wonderful. In my family pork was always served on the first day of the New Year.
ReplyDeleteThe soup sounds hearty and delicious.
I wish you a happy and blessed New Year. Catherine xo
It's a beauty, Sam! Happy New Year and hope lots of luck does indeed come your way.
ReplyDeleteI hold to the tradition of eating black-eyed peas on New Year's Day, as well as greens of some kind. I've never made black-eyed pea soup but your recipe certainly warrants a try! Today at a sweet little restaurant named "Sweet Basil," I had split-pea soup with ham and it was so good on this cold winter day. Happy New Year to you.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year Sam! Your black eyed peas look delightful. Reflecting today, I realized I have been following you for several years. I am looking forward to reading all your posts in 2014.
ReplyDeleteHappy New Year to you and your family, Sam!
ReplyDeleteI love black eyed peas and your soup looks beautiful and very tasty.

We are in the Panhandle for the New Years celebration with friends. The black eyed peas are ready to go. The collard greens are made and the pork is thawing in the fridge. The cornbread ingredients are ready too. Happy New Years Sam and Meakin. Looking forward to spending more time with you in 2014.
ReplyDeleteThe soup looks great. We always have collards (which bring dollars) and black eyed peas (which bring the cents) on January 1. Happy New Year Sam, I hope that 2014 brings many wonderful things your way!

ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a delicious southern tradition that I've sadly never tried. With the snow and cold weather we've been having a warm, comforting soup like yours sounds delicious.

Oh Sam, I so wish I had seen this delicious recipe before having my standard black eyed peas....looks delicious!!
ReplyDeleteDropping back by to say I saw Hoppin' John done in cute little mini compotes for a party. I think this could work that way, too, for a New Years party where you were serving various dishes. But for me? I'll take a bowl, please!
ReplyDeleteXO,
Sheila
